The UN continue negotiations over a Global Plastics Treaty

The United Nations will reconvene in Geneva from 5 to 14 August 2025 for a critical round of negotiations on a Global Plastics Treaty—a long-awaited, legally binding agreement aimed at tackling plastic pollution and its harmful impact on our ecosystems and health. The failure to reach a consensus last December in Busan underscored deep divisions, particularly on capping plastic production, regulating hazardous chemicals, and funding mechanisms for developing nations.

This treaty would be an important step forward in preventing the widespread contamination of micro- and nanoplastics that now permeate our waters, soils and agri-food chains in general. Achieving a strong agreement in Geneva would be a landmark victory in safeguarding both environmental and human health.

With geopolitical tensions rising, the road ahead is challenging. But the need for ambitious, science-driven action has never been more urgent.
